A guy said that he used to run with a man who would judge how well he did by how many women finished the race before him.
Everyone laughed at that.
I felt like I just heard a racist joke or something. Not that it matters to this crowd, but women runners finish marathons in 2 1/2 hours. That’s a pretty insane achievement for any person, male or female.
And then I wondered if maybe I am getting too sensitive about these things.
Then in the shower later I was thinking about the “hunter/gatherer” explanation for the differences between men and women. It provides a pretty simplistic view of men strong, women weak, kind of like the guy above. It’s interesting because if the men went off to hunt, the women would have had to be strong enough to protect themselves and their children. But if they were strong enough to protect themselves, then wouldn’t they be strong enough to hunt? I realize that last statement is full of half-science, over-simplified, generic terminology, but.. I wondered.
That’s where I left off. Things are complicated, and some men still think that “don’t be like a girl” is good advice. Yes? No?
